Bahamas win NORCECA Men’s World Championship Qualifier in Curacao

 
Bahamas' players celebrate their perfect weekend in Curacao where they won four matches in two days to top the NORCECA Group A first round qualifier towards the FIVB Men's World Championship
 

Willemstad, Curacao, December 2, 2012 – Bahamas won their four matches of the weekend to top the NORCECA Group A Men’s First Round Tournament towards the 2014 FIVB World Championship in Poland.

Hosts Curacao and Martinique joined Bahamas as the three teams qualified to the second round tournaments of the confederation scheduled for next year.

In Sunday’s action at the International School of Curacao, Bahamas won their matches against Martinique and Curacao while Martinique recovered to defeat Jamaica and secure the important third spot.

Bahamas 3, Martinique 0
Bahamas lived up to their pre-tournament billing as favourites when they swept past Martinique in straight sets (25-16, 27-25, 25-16) to top the preliminary round. Leading the way for the Bahamians was the trio of Renaldo Knowles, Prince’tanique Wilson and Byron Ferguson with 13, 11 and 11 points respectively. Edouard Lowinsky was the lone player for Martinique to reach double-figures with 12 points.

Curacao 3, Jamaica 0
Darwin Colina topscored for the second time in three matches as hosts Curacao defeated Jamaica in straight sets (25-15, 25-22, 25-22) to secure second spot at the end of the preliminary round. Colina amassed 18 points, while veteran Gilbert Poulina added 14 and captain Ebram Raphael nine. For the Jamaicans Conaradio Taylor was the lone scorer with double-figures with 11 points. Curacao outscored its opponent 10-4 on blocks and 8-3 on service aces.

Martinique 3, Jamaica 0
Mayik Gros Desormeaux and Aymeric Christine scored 12 points apiece as Martinique secured the vital third spot by beating Jamaica in straight sets (25-18, 25-20, 25-18). Having tasted defeat against the Jamaicans in four-sets in their round-robin meeting, the Martiniquaises were determined not to suffer the same outcome and won in 59 minutes, the shortest match of the competition. For Jamaica, captain Dellan Brown got 11 while Ryck Webb and Delford Morgan finished with 10 and 9 respectively.

Bahamas 3, Curacao 1
Bahamas finished atop of the two-day tournament following a four-set win (22-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-21) over Curacao. The winners held a 15-7 advantage in the blocking category and made 22 errors to 35 by the defeated side. Byron Ferguson led Bahamas with 18 points, including 7 blocks, while Renaldo Knowles and Prince’tanique Wilson added 14 and 13 respectively. Curacao’s Darwin Colina had a match-high of 25 points and Raygid Isenia added 15.
