Brazil had a tough time overcoming archrivals Argentina 25-14, 25-23, 25-23 in Callao, while Peru had an easier victory over Chile, 25-15, 25-9, 25-22.
Colombia downed Paraguay 3-0 (25-16, 25-6, 25-6) and Venezuela beat Uruguay by a similar score, 25-13, 25-10, 25-15.
The results meant that Brazil and Peru topped their respective groups with 3-0 records. Brazil will now face Chile in Sunday’s semifinals, while Peru will take on Argentina.
Brazilian opposite Lorenne put on a fine display, notching up 17 points to lead her team, while Argentina were led by Camila Hiruela with 12 points.
“This is no longer a South American classic; this is a world classic,” Brazil coach Mauricio Thomas stated. “Both teams play at a very high level. Today, we had patience and I am happy because we learned to overcome our difficulties at the right time.”
The Championship will run until November 27 and the top three teams will qualify for next year’s U18 World Championship in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.
