FIVB course for school teachers in Maldives

The teacher's training course was the first of its kind in the Maldives

Malé, Maldives, November 19, 2012 -  A total of 32 school teachers, representing 18 different Maldivian islands, have gathered in Malé city, Maldives for a course showing them how best to introduce volleyball to their students. The level of participation is indicative of the popularity and interest in volleyball across the country. The participants, selected from 43 applicants, include ten women.

FIVB instructor Mr Shanwen Zhao – who also directed a successful FIVB level I coaching course in Addu city on the Addu Atoll in 2011 – is leading this first teachers training programme in the Maldives. “This course is going to strengthen the volleyball network across the country and will produce well trained professionals to help volleyball grow at the grassroots level and improve the level of volleyball players in the country,” he said.

“All participants are qualified teachers who work with children on a daily basis. Now we are going to equip them with volleyball skills and this will be a great leap forward for volleyball in the Maldives,” said Hussain Mohamed, general secretary of the Volleyball Association of the Maldives (VAM).

The five-day course includes theory classes at the Hiriyaa School and practical sessions at the adjoining Malé Youth Centre Indoor Hall.

The opening ceremony was attended by Mr Hussain Mohamed (VAM general secretary), Mr Mohamed Sharaf (head of VAM technical department), VAM beach volleyball commission member Mr Ahmed Ibrahim, other VAM officials and members of the press.
