The final stretch ready to serve off in Doha

Doha, Qatar, October 17, 2012 – The semifinals of the FIVB Club World Championships are all set to kick off following the completion of pool play in the annual event at the Aspire Zone Hall of Doha, Qatar on Wednesday.

Trentino Diatec of Italy will play Russia’s Zenit Kazan in the first men’s semifinal at 15:00 as PGE Skra Belchatow of Poland take on Brazil’s Sada Cruzeiro at 19:00.

In the women’s semis on Thursday, it will be Sollys Nestle of Brazil against Lancheras de Cataño of Puerto Rico at 10:00 and Turkey’s Fenerbahce challenging the Azerbaijan’s Rabita Baku of at 17:00.

In Wednesday’s program, Zenit Kazan beat Zamalek of Egypt in straight sets while PGE Skra Belchatow needed four sets to defeat Al Arabi Doha. In the women’s event, Fenerbahce scored a 3-o win over Kenya Prisons.

PGE Skra Belchatow finished with a 3-0 mark and eight points in Pool B while Zenit Kazan totaled seven points to go with their 2-1 win-loss record. Trentino and Sada Cruzeiro both recorded seven points in Pool B but the Italian club had a 3-0 balance.

Sollys Nestle and Fenerbahce won their two matches of the preliminary phase while Lancheras and Rabita Baku will enter the semifinals with 1-1 win-loss record.

PGE Skra Belchatow 3, Al Arabi Doha 1

PGE Skra Belchatow qualified as the top team in men’s Pool B by overcoming Al Arabi Doha in four sets (25-17, 25-17, 16-25, 25-17). The winners outblocked Al Arabi 13-3 while the home team was slightly better in the aces category 7-5.

Aleksandar Atanasijevic was the top scorer of PGE Skra Belchatow with 19 points followed by Mariusz Wlazly with 14, including three blocks. Michal Winiarski and Daniel Plinski added 11 and 10 respectively with the former finishing with a match-high four blocks.Christian Pampel led the defeated forces with 17 tallies while Ahmed Al Bakhet and Mohamed Ibrahim added 11 and 10 respectively.

Zenit Kazan 3, Zamalek 0

Zenit Kazan of Russia secured one of the two semifinal spots of men’s Pool B by demolishing Zamalek of Egypt in straight sets (25-13, 25-19, 25-14). The final position of Zenit was pending on the outcome of the match between PGE Skra Belchatow and Al Arabi Doha.

The winning side held huge margins in the categories of blocks (12-2) and service aces (8-2). They made 14 errors to 21 by the losers and every player in Zenit Kazan’s roster saw action in the match.

Evgeny Sivozhelez and Matthew Anderson each collected three blocks and two aces with 10 and 9 points respectively for Zenit Kazan while Maxim Mikhaylov contributed 10 points with one block and two service winners. Reda Haikald and Mohamed Badawy each finished with 9 points for Zamalek.

Fenerbahce 3, Kenya Prisons 0

Fenerbahce SK Istanbul subdued Kenya Prisons in straight sets (25-14, 25-17, 25-11) to win women’s Pool B with a 2-0 win-loss record.

The Turkish club received the benefit of 29 points from the opponents’ errors while making only 10 of their own for the entire match. The winners held a 7-4 advantage in blocks and 5-2 in aces.

Seda Tokatlioglu led the Turkish club with 13 points, including five blocks, followed by Mari Steinbrecher who notched 12 with three aces. Paula Pequeno charted eight. Lydia Mayo was the only player of Kenya with double digits in the scoring charts with 11 points while Everlyne Makuto totaled seven.
