Top positions in men's Pool A of Doha already defined
Doha, Qatar, October 14, 2012 – Sada Cruzeiro of Brazil and Trentino Diatec of Italy secured spots in the semifinals of the Men’s FIVB Club World Championship as the top two teams of Pool A following the results of Sunday in Doha. Sada Cruzeiro defeated Al Rayyan Sport Club of Qatar in four sets to increase their tally to six points while Trentino beat Tigres de Nuevo Leon of Mexico in straight sets for a total of five points. The amount of points accumulated by the leaders is out of reach for both defeated sides. In the other men’s contest on Sunday, Russia’s Zenit Kazan overcame Al Arabi Doha in four sets to claim three valuable points in Pool B. PGE Skra Belchatow of Poland also earned three points. Zamalek of Egypt and Al Arabi are both 0-1 with zero points so far. In Monday’s action, Al Arabi play against Zamalek at 10:00 while PGE Skra challenge Zenit Kazan at 19:00. In the morning match Sunday, Sollys Nestle of Brazil overwhelmed Bohai Bank of China in consecutive sets in the Pool A of the six-team female competition. The women’s schedule on Monday features defending champions Rabita Baku of Azerbaijan against Sollys Nestle at 15:00 followed by Fenerbahce of Turkey against Lancheras de Cataño of Puerto Rico at 17:00. Sada Cruzeiro 3, Al Rayyan 1 Sada Cruzeiro of Brazil defeated Qatar’s Al Rayyan Sport Club in four sets (25-20, 23-25, 25-16, 25-22) for its second triumph in as many nights in men’s Pool A. They lead Trentino Diatec (2-0) by one point in their group. The South Americans out-served Al Rayyan 7-1 and had a 9-8 edge in service aces. The winners gave away 35 points in errors to 28 by the losers. After beating Tigres of Nuevo Leon one day earlier, the South American club put on another good volleyball show led by Wallace de Souza’s tournament-high 25 points. Marcos Leal, Mauricio Borges and Douglas Cordeiro contributed 13, 10 and 9 points respectively to the win while Yoandy Leal produced six valuable points as a starter in the fourth set. David Lee topped Al Rayyan with 12 points followed by Sirianis Mendez and Valentin Bratoev with 11 tallies apiece. Trentino Diatec 3, Nuevo Leon 0 The winners out-served their opponents 7-1 and held a slight 4-3 edge in the service winners charts. Jan Skotr led Trentino with 18 points followed by Matey Kaziyski with 16, including three aces. Juan Virgen topped Nuevo Leon with 12 points and Ismael Guerrero chipped in with 9 tallies. Zenit Kazan 3, Al Arabi Doha 1 Evgeny Sivozhelez topped the winning side with 22 points as three other teammates also scored in double digits. Matt Anderson and Maxim Mikhaylov added 16 and 15 respectively while Nikolay Apalikov contributed 10. Christian Pampel finished with a match-high 23 points for Al-Arabi followed by Ribeiro Renan and Ahmed Al Bakhet, each with 13. Matti Ovainen tallied 12 points. In the women’s field, Sollys Nestle trounced Bohai Bank of China. Sollys Nestle 3, Bohai Bank 0 Sheilla Castro led the winners with 17 points, including three blocks while Jaqueline Carvalho added two blocks and one ace among her 12 points. Thaisa Menezes and Fernanda Rodrigues contributed 12 and 11 points to the winning effort. Yin Na and Chen Liyi were the only Chinese players who finished with double figures in the scoring charts with 14 and 12 respectively.
