Suriname's players celebrate their thrilling victory over Barbados at Cayman Islands on Sunday

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, October 8, 2012 – Suriname, Barbados and Aruba secured tickets to the next phase of qualifications as the top three finishers at the NORCECA First Round Tournament of the 2014 FIVB Men’s World Championship in Poland that concluded in Grand Cayman on Sunday.

Suriname prevailed over Barbados 3-2 (25-22, 18-25, 15-25, 25-20, 15-12) in the match for first place while Aruba edged hosts Cayman Islands in a thrilling five-setter (21-25, 25-20, 11-25, 25-16, 15-13) in the decisive match for third place and the last spot in the second phase.

Antoine Verny Vliet and Keven Sporkslede led Suriname with 16 and 15 points, respectively, while Marc Flu contributed 13. Barbados’ Shawn Simpson and Fabian Cox had 25 and 20 points in the losing cause.

Mitchel Daniel topped Aruba with 17 points, including six blocks, followed by Frank Meermans and Fransua Angela with 16 and 13, respectively. Keeble Knight and Olney Thompson finished with 17 and 16 for the defeated side.
