Maxim Mikhaylov named captain of Zenit Kazan

Mikhaylov has served as temporary captain before, both for Zenit and the Russian national team

Lausanne, Switzerland, October 4, 2012 – Russian national team star Maxim Mikhaylov has been made captain of Zenit Kazan, just in time for the Club World Championships in Doha, Qatar.

Mikhaylov took over the captain’s armband from his teammate Alexander Volkov, who is expected to be out of action for half a seaon due to a knee injury. The role is not quite new for Mikhaylov – he has had to temporarily take on the duties of captain several times before, both for his club and his national team.

As the new official captain of Zenit, Mikhaylov will lead his team through a tough club season: Zenit is taking part in the two premiere Russian National competitions, Superleague and the Russian Cup, as well as international club competitions, like the European Champions league and the Club World Championships.

The 2012 Club World Championships begin October 13. Eight of the globe's best men's teams and six of the best women's teams will compete for the annual title. The latest news on the event is available on the tournament website
