USA’s women and Canada’s men thrive in Chula Vista
Chula Vista, USA, September 30, 2012 – Emily Day and Heather Hughes of USA and Chaim Schalk and Benjamin Saxton of Canada captured the gold medals of women and men respectively of Chula Vista Beach Volleyball Tournament, the eighth stop of the 2012 NORCECA Circuit held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center during last weekend. Day and Hughes beat compatriots Morgan Beck and Summer Ross 2-0 (21-19, 21-17) in 39 minutes on a hot and breezy day in the community near San Diego, California. Schalk and Saxton of Canada-1 defeated the USA-3 duo of Will Montgomery and Tri Bourne, 21-16, 21-15 in 37 minutes. “It was fun to battle each other out in the final,” Hughes said. “It’s always good to play steady and play your best toward the end of the season.” “We were tough on the opponents,” Schalk said. “It got windy in the gold medal match and our ball control was good, really good. So that helps a lot.” Mexico’s Martha Revuelta and Bibi Candelas beat Canada’s Jamie Broder and Kristina Valjas for the women’s bronze medal, 2-1 (17-21, 22-20, 15-9) while Cameron Wheelan and Michael Plantiga of Canada-2 beat the USA-5 team of Avery Drost and Jesse Rambis, 31-29, 21-19 in 55 minutes for the men’s bronze. In the semifinals, Day and Hughes had to battle to defeat Revuelta and Candelas, outdueling the Mexican pair 2-1 (24-26, 21-14, 15-8) in 1 hour, 1 minute. Beck and Ross had an easier time beating Broder and Valjas, 2-0 (21-15, 21-15) in the other semifinal. Schalk and Saxton advanced to the finals with a 2-0 (21-11, 21-15) victory over Wheelan and Plantiga while Bourne and Montgomery defeated Drost and Rambis, 2-0 (31-29, 21-19).
