Placi named as new Bulgaria coach

Placi (right) will hope to build on Bulgaria's impressive fourth place finish at the London Olympics

Sofia, Bulgaria, August 31, 2012 – The Bulgarian Volleyball Federation (BVF) has announced that Italian Camillo Placi will be the new coach of the men's national team. The former assistant to the previous coach Nayden Naydenov, has been engaged for the next Olympic cycle, renewable after two years.

Placi, 56, had been the Bulgarian assistant since 2009, helping Silvano Prandi and Radostin Stoychev take Bulgaria to a European Championship bronze medal and to Olympic Games qualification in 2012 respectively.

Prior to Bulgaria, Placi, 56, was the assistant coach to Vladimir Alekno with Russia from 2007 to 2008, helping Russia win silver at the 2007 World Cup and 2008 Olympics.

Despite a disrupted build up, Bulgaria performed well at the London 2012 Olympic Games finishing fourth to equal their second best result at the Olympics, following a silver medal in 1980.
