Vancouver, Canada, August 21, 2012 – Taylor Pischke of Winnipeg and Melissa Humana-Paredes of Toronto become the new women's Canadian beach volleyball champions, while Sam Schachter of Toronto and Maverick Hatch of Comox, British Colombia take the men’s title.
Pischke and Humana-Paredes defeated defending champions Heather Bansley and Liz Maloney of Toronto in a thrilling final 2-1 (21-16, 19-21, 21-19) at the 2012 Volleyball Canada Beach Nationals held at Spanish Banks Beach.
Bansley and Maloney have represented Canada on the World Tour for three years running, and narrowly missed out on appearing in the London Olympics when they lost a head-to-head match with Marie-Anrdée Lessard and Annie Martin for Canada's lone spot. Humana-Paredes and Pischke are a new pairing, and both are just out of juniors at 19 years old.
The men’s final was
also a nail biter. Schachter and Hatch edged Chaim Schalk of Red Deer,
Altberta, and Matt Zbyszewski of Toronto 2-1 (19-21, 21-16, 18-16).
Jamie Broder of Victoria and Kristina Valjas of Toronto took the bronze on the women's side with a 2-1 (21-19, 17-21, 17-15) win over Julie Rodrigue of Quebec City and Kacie MacTavish of Sharon, Ont. For the men, Christian Redmann of Toronto and Ben Saxton of Calgary defeated Sam Pedlow of Barrie, Ontario, and Grant O’Gorman of Toronto 2-0 (21-15, 21-19).
