First victory for Guatemala, first loss for Mexico in NORCECA U18 Championship

Tijuana, Mexico, August 9, 2012 – Guatemala earned their first win at the NORCECA Women’s U18 Continental Championship by defeating Costa Rica 3-2 (25-21, 17-25, 24-26, 25-17, 15-11) while the Dominican Republic and USA also both registered wins as the tournament continued in Tijuana, Mexico.
Estefanie Bethancourth was the match’s top scorer with a total of 22 points for Guatemala, while Angie Montero Alfaro and Daniela Vargas scored 15 and 13 points for Costa Rica. Montero Alfaro recorded four aces for Costa Rica, as did Gabriela Martinez on the Guatemalan side.
Dominican Republic defeated Puerto Rico in straight sets (25-20, 25-21, 25-19) on Wednesday in their second match at the NORCECA Women’s U18 Continental Championship. Brayelin Martinez scored 25 points and Natalia Martinez 10 for the Dominican squad. Julymar Otero scored 10, while Genesis Miranda and Paola Rojas scored nine each, for Puerto Rico.
Mexico will qualify second in their pool after losing to the United States in the last preliminary round match of Pool A. USA won in straight sets 25-14, 25-12, 25-17. Carli Snyder and Simone Lee were the top scorers for the American team with 14 points each. Mexico’s leading scorer was Fernanda Guitron with seven.
The quarterfinals will be played August 9. Puerto Rico will face Guatemala, while Trinidad and Tobago will play against Mexico. The US and Dominican Republic teams, who finished the preliminary round on top of their Pools, will go straight through to the semifinals.
