USA, Dominican Republic, Mexico winners on day two of NORCECA U18 Championship

Guatemala couldn't overcome the United States on Tuesday

Tijuana, Mexico, August 7, 2012 – USA and hosts Mexico both racked up their second win of the NORCECA U18 Continental Championship on Tuesday while the Dominican Republic entered the tournament with its first as the competition continues in Tijuana.

The US beat Guatemala in straight sets (25-6, 25-5, 25-12). Carli Snyder scored 12 points and had four aces while Simone Lee finished with 10 points.

Guatemala coach Julio Domínguez was encouraged by the way his team improved over the course of the game. “Nobody likes to lose, but this match against a high level team is important and in the last set, the girls saw what they are able to do," he said.

USA coach Reed Sunahara congratulated Dominguez after the third set performace. “Guatemala did good things. I wish the best of luck to the coach and on our side we stayed focused and excecuted very well. I was happy for that but we still have a long way to go, and now to prepare against Mexico.”

The Dominican Republic scored a win over Trinidad and Tobago in three sets (25-8, 25-6, 25-5). Dominican captain Natalia Martinez was the scoring leader with 16 points while Brayelin Martinez and Jineiry Martínez (seven aces), finished with 12 apiece.

In a nod to the ongoing Olympic Games, the U18 unit came on to the court wearing uniforms with the names of the senior team that competed in London for the Dominican Republic. Martinez wore the No.10 jersey of Milagros Cabral, who retired earlier this week.

México finished the day with a straight sets (25-15, 25-11, 25-10) win over Costa Rica with Fernanda Bañuelos and Melissa Romero as top scorers.

“It is our second match, we have lost the two of them, that is not a motivation, but we feel proud of the good moments and good actions we had,” Costa Rica captain Angie Montero Alfaro said. “This was a good match against Mexico, a tough team, as we gain experience.”
