Turkey win Edison Cup ahead of Olympic Games

Turkey continued their momentum for the London 2012 Olympic Games with the win on Sunday

Rome, Italy, July 13, 2012 – Turkey’s women’s team will go into the London 2012 Olympic Games with confidence after they clinched the Edison Cup in Italy on Sunday after Russia beat the hosts 3-2 (25-12, 24-26, 23-25, 25-22, 15-11) in the final match.

The conclusion of the three-team round robin tournament means all three sides have finished their preparations for the Olympics, set to take place in two weeks’ time.

Turkey had beaten the Russians two days earlier before going down to the home side in five sets. But the extra point was enough for them to clinch the title.

Some of the top stars of the game were on show for all teams, including Italy’s Eleonora Lo Bianco and Francesca Piccinini, Russia’s Ekaterina Gamova and Turkey’s Neslihan Darnel.

All three move onto the Great British capital with Olympic gold in their sights. Russia will be hoping to medal for the first time since 2004 when they won silver while Italy and Turkey will be hoping to stand on the podium for the first time.
