USA hold off Brazil in five-set thriller as World Grand Prix kicks off in Ningbo

 
Megan Hodge lifted the USA over Brazil in an opening five-set thriller.
 

Ningbo, China, June 27, 2012 – World No. 1 and two-time defending champions the United States held off reigning Olympic champions Brazil in a five-set thriller as the 2012 Volleyball World Grand Prix Finals kicked off on Wednesday.

 

Megan Hodge scored 16 points to lead the American women, who have clinched back-to-back titles in the annual world elite women’s volleyball event in 2010 and 2011, to an opening victory at the Beilun Sports and Arts Gymnasium.

 

World Grand Prix Finals debutants Turkey needed four sets to claim their opening victory over Thailand as Darnel Neslihan notched up game-high 27 points for the Turkish women, who have qualified for the Olympic Games for the first time in history.

 

In the last match of the day, the host China beat Cuba in straight sets with Yang Junjing leading the Chinese women with 12 points.
