Poland the big winners from weekend's World League action

Poland's fans celebrate their big win over Brazil

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 17, 2012 – Poland won the biggest clash of the weekend in the 2012 FIVB World League when they edged Pool B rivals Brazil 3-1 in Tampere, Finland, and secured their spot in the Finals in Bulgaria. Going into the match, the two teams were level on 26 points apiece, although Poland had the better win-loss record, 9-2 against Brazil’s 8-3. Poland triumphed 25-22, 25-23, 21-25, 25-22.

"Today we are a very happy team,” Poland captain Marcin Mozdzonek said after the match. “We now go to the Finals in Sofia after beating the No. 1 team in the world.”

In Pool A, Cuba, led by captain Wilfredo Leon, were in sizzling form as they dispatched all three of their rivals – Japan, Serbia and Russia – to improve their record to 5-1 for 14 points, two more than Serbia.

In Pool C, Italy were the whipping boys for USA, France and Korea, dropping all three of their matches in Lyon, France. USA and France head the group with 11 points each, two more than Italy.

In Pool D, Portugal continued to lose – they are now 0-6 – but their week in Argentina was much more positive, taking a set in each match off Germany, Bulgaria and Argentina. Those three all have 4-2 records. Germany leads the table with 13 points, followed by 12 for Argentina and 11 for Bulgaria.
