Trentino, Belchatow and Rabita announced as wildcards for Club World Champs

Azerbaijan's Rabita Baku will have the chance to defend their title after being granted the women's wildcard berth

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 15, 2012 – Italian men’s club Trentino PlanetWin265 and Azerbaijani side Rabita Baku will both have the chance to defend their FIVB Volleyball Men’s and Women’s Club World Championship crowns after being given wildcard vacancies for the 2012 edition of the tournament while CEV Champions League runners-up PGE Skra Belchatow of Poland fill the other berth on the men’s side.

The three teams will now travel to Doha, Qatar from October 13 to 19 for the premier annual club tournament.

Trentino will be looking to make history by becoming the first side to win four Club World Championship titles in a row. Belchatow will also want to improve on previous performances after winning silver at the 2009 and 2010 editions.

However, last year’s runners-up Zenit Kazan of Russia will go into the tournament as the in-form European side after sealing the CEV Champions League, beating Belchatow in the final.

They will also be joined by Men’s African Club champions Zamalek of Egypt who return to the competition for the first time since 2009. On that occasion they finished fifth, picking up just one win over Puerto Rico’s Plataneros de Corozal.

Mexico’s Tigres de la Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon have been nominated by NORCECA to represent the region. It will be the side’s debut at the tournament and the first time a Mexican club has competed.

Hosts Al Arabi Doha will want to improve on previous years. On the last two occasions they have finished third in their pool, just missing out on a semifinal berth, so will want to go one better than that in front of their home fans.

South America’s representative will be decided at the Men’s South American Club Championship in Linares, Chile from September 3 to 9. The host city will welcome Brazil’s Sada-Cruzeiro and Argentina’s UPCN with the three battling it out for just one berth.

The women’s edition will not only feature 2011 champions Rabita but also 2010 winners Fenerbahçe, who missed out on qualification for last year’s tournament. The Turkish side earned their place after defeating French outfit RC Cannes in the CEV Women’s Champions League final.

Joining them will be Women’s African Club champions Kenya Prisons who will be competing at the third tournament in a row. The last two occasions they have failed to clinch a win but will be hoping for improvement this time around.

China’s Tianjin Bridgestone won the Asian Women’s Club Championship to book their place in Doha. Surprisingly, it is the first time a club from China will compete at the tournament and they have a wealth of experience from the national team, most notably in captain Qiuyue Wei.

NORCECA have nominated Puerto Rican side Lancheras Catano as the team to represent them in Doha. It is the first time a club from Puerto Rico has been to the Club World Championships with teams from the Dominican Republic representing the region over the last two years.

The final spot will be decided at the Women’s South American Club Championship, set to take place in Brazil from September 3 to 9. As of yet it is undecided which teams will compete at the continental tournament.
