Olympic Qualification Process summary for volleyball

 
A mixture of continental and world Olympic qualification events will determine the eight additional teams to join the three World Cup qualifiers and host country Great Britain at the 2012 Olympic Games
 

Lausanne, Switzerland, November 22, 2011 – A total of 12 teams per gender will participate in the volleyball competition at the 2012 Olympic Games and while there are three Olympic tickets on offer in each of the FIVB World Cups for women and men, there a total of eight other tickets available via different means in addition to the hosts Great Britain.

Women
Three tickets are on offer via one Women’s World Olympic Qualification tournament to take place in Japan from May 19-27 while five other vacancies are available via the five continental qualification tournaments with the Asian Confederation tournament being played at the same time as the World Olympic Qualification event.

The participants in the Women’s World Olympic Qualification tournament include Japan as organiser and the top three ranked Asian teams plus the participation of four non-Asian teams, confirmed as per the FIVB world ranking of January 15, 2012:  CEV (2), NORCECA (1) and one from CSV or CAVB (the best ranked team in the world ranking at January 15, 2012).

The top three teams will book a place at the 2012 London Olympics followed by the best Asian team, which will join them as per the Asian Confederation vacancy.

The other continental qualification tournaments will be played as per a continental championship for CSV, CAVB and NORCECA while CEV has already started its pre-qualification tournament for its Confederation qualification tournament, which will take place next year.

Men
It is a similar scenario for the men however there are three World Olympic Qualification tournaments in Japan (June 2-9), Italy and Germany (both on June 8-10) in addition to the five continental qualification tournaments.

The organisers and top four Asian teams will play at the World Olympic Qualification tournament in Japan, with nine additional teams as per the FIVB world ranking of January 15, 2012 participating with the organisers across the three tournaments as per the following breakdown: CEV (3), NORCECA (2), AVC (2), CSV (1) and CAVB (1). A drawing of lots will determine the composition of the three tournaments.

The first of each World Olympic Qualification tournament will qualify to London. The first Asian team of the event in Japan will also qualify as per the Asian Confederation vacancy.

Olympic qualifying process summary
The total number of teams participating in Olympic Games will be 24 (12 for Men and 12 for Women).

Vacancies for London Olympic Games 2012:
1 Host Country (Great Britain)
3 from World Cup 2011 (1st, 2nd and 3rd of WC 2011)
1 from each Continental Qualification Tournament (has to be played in the period from 15th December 2011 to 15th January 2012)
Asian Continental Qualification Tournament (can be played together with the WOQT in Japan)
3 from World Olympic Qualification Tournaments

World Olympic Qualification Tournaments: Three tournaments for Men and one tournament for Women.
The drawing of lots for the WOQTs will follow the rule that teams of the same Confederation cannot be drawn in the same Tournament (except the Organizer). Asian teams participating to the WOQT cannot be drawn in the Japan tournament. For both events (men and women), the drawing of lots will take place in February, 2012.

Women’s World Olympic Qualification Tournament: Japan Women’s Tournament:
The participation teams for the joint Women’s and Asian Tournaments to be held in Japan as follows:
 1 Host team (Japan)
 3 Teams from Asia (not qualified for the Olympic Games)
4 Non Asian teams being the highest ranked teams not-qualified for the Olympic Games (as at 15 January 2012 or following the completion of all Continental Olympic Qualification Tournaments, whichever is later) as per drawing of lots distribution - 2 Europe, 1 NORCECA, 1 South America or 1 Africa. According to the BoA decision the vacancy from South America/Africa will be granted to the highest ranked team on the world ranking (between South America and Africa)

Olympic Qualification Tickets: For the Women’s World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Japan, the first three ranked team to qualify, then the best ranked Asian team among the remaining teams participating in the tournament.

Men’s World Olympic Qualification Tournaments: (Japan, Italy and Germany)
The participating teams for the joint Men’s World Olympic Qualification and Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament to be held in Japan will be as follows:
 1 Host team (Japan)
 4 Teams from Asia (not qualified for the Olympic Games)
3 Non Asian teams being the highest ranked teams not-qualified for the Olympic Games (as at 15 January 2012 or following the completion of all Continental Olympic Qualification Tournaments, whichever is later) as per drawing of lots distribution.

Italy (Rome) and Germany (Berlin) tournaments: 
Vacancies to the Men World Olympic Qualification Tournament:
2 Host Countries
6 other teams
The nine additional teams will be split as per the following: 3 Europe, 2 Asia, 2 NORCECA, 1 South America, 1 Africa.

Olympic Qualification Tickets: For the Men’s World Olympic Qualification tournaments in Japan, the Olympic vacancies will be decided as follows:  The first ranked team to qualify, then the best ranked Asian team among the remaining teams participating in the tournament will qualify.

Olympic Qualification Tickets:For the Men’s World Olympic Qualification tournaments in Italy and Germany, one Olympic vacancy each will be decided as follows: The first ranked team in each tournament to qualify.
