Brazil seal 17th South American title to deny Argentina World Cup place

Brazil celebrate their 17th South American gold medal in Callao, Peru on Sunday

Callao, Peru, October 2, 2011 – Brazil lived up to all expectations on Sunday as they sealed their 17th Women’s South American Championship, denying Argentina a place at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Cup 2011 in the process as the tournament concluded in Callao, Peru.

Brazil had already qualified for the World Cup 2011, set to take place in Japan from November 4 to 18, a day earlier by making the final, but Argentina needed to beat their long-time rivals to be sure of their place. However, in finishing second they missed out as only the top four runners-up from the FIVB Women’s Senior World Ranking (as it stood on January 15) qualify. At that time they sat at 25th with Algeria, silver medallists at the Women’s African Championship ahead of them in 15th.

The world No.1 side were in a class of their own as they picked up a straight sets (25-10, 25-7. 25-17) win in the final while hosts Peru completed the podium with a 3-1 (25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22) victory over Colombia in the bronze medal match.

Jaqueline Carvalho topped the score sheet for Brazil with 14 points while Sheilla Castro, who was named tournament MVP, was on fine form as usual.

“The most important thing in today’s game was our concentration and determination,” Brazil coach Jose Guimaraes said. “We served very well and that made easier the work because the opponent couldn’t attack us as well as other games.”

Final South American Ranking:
1. Brazil
2. Argentina
3. Peru
4. Colombia
5. Uruguay
6. Chile
7. Paraguay
8. Bolivia
