Favourites Tunisia and Cameroon set to clash on opening day of African Nations champs
The eventual champions will earn a berth to the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup, due to take place in Japan from November 20 to December 4, with the top three ranked teams then earning a coveted spot at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The eight teams were distributed into two groups with hosts Morocco drawn in a tough group alongside Cameroon, Tunisia and Botswana Pool A. Pool B will see an early remake of the final at the last edition, with defending champions Egypt, who have won the tournament on the last three occasions, set to take on Algeria. They will be joined by South Africa and Congo Brazzaville.
The drawing of lots was attended by Morocco Volleyball Association president and the head of the organizing committee Abdelhadi Ghzali, SOC delgate Mory Kieta, referee delegate Hassan Ahmed and most of the Morocco Volleyball Federation board members.
Tunisia are the record holders in terms of the number of titles to their name, with eight cups since the tournament began in 1976. Egypt have captured the crown five times, including the last three editions. Both Algeria and Cameroon have won the title twice.
