Japan women beat hosts in Golden Set

Japan's women's team survived a Golden Set to beat Chinese Taipei to claim the AVC Continental Cup Sub Zonal Tournament

Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei, December 26, 2010 – Pool B at the AVC Continental Cup Sub Zonal Tournament of Eastern Asia concluded on Sunday with Japan triumphant in both the women's and men's tournaments.

Chinese Taipei pushed Japan all the way in the women's event, before losing out in a Golden Set. They duly finished second in the pool with one win and one loss but still progress together with Japan to the next stage of the zonal tournament, where they will compete against sides from China and Hong Kong. Macau finished third without a win.

Conditions on the final day of the tournament provided a serious test of the Japan and Chinese Taipei players, with plummeting temperatures and strong winds. Japan 2's Satoko Urata/Takemi Nishibori took the opening match against Chinese Taipei 1 in three sets. The Japanese took the first set 21-17, but Kou Nai Han/Chang Hui Min, representing the hosts, prevailed 21-13 in the second set. Japan reasserted their control in the third set, however, winning 15-8.

The second match between Japan 1 and Chinese Taipei 2 produced a surprise as the host team of Hsieh Pei Shan/Liu Pi Hsin played amazingly well to prevail 21-18, 21-12. In the afternoon session, Kou Nai Han/Chang Hui Min of Chinese Taipei 1, fuelled by the cheers of the local crowd, displayed some impressive spiking and digging skills as they defeated Japan 1 2-0 (21-17, 21-15).

Japan 2's Satoko Urata/Takemi Nishibori then claimed the fourth match 2-0 (21-6, 21-11) to take the contest into a Golden Set – the first such tiebreaker in Asia. The host pair Kou Nai Han/Chang Hui Min (Chinese Taipei 1) dominated at first and moved two points ahead but were eventually overcome by Satoko Urata/Takemi Nishibori (Japan 2) who ran out 19-17 winners after a hard-fought battle.

In the men's event, Japan sailed through their four games against Chinese Taipei, seeing off their rivals 4-0 without dropping a single set. In the process they claimed first place in the tournament, with Chinese Taipei finishing second and Macau third.
