Dominican Republic strikes gold for a third consecutive time
Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, July 23, 2010 – The Dominican Republic prevailed against hosts Puerto Rico in a five-set battle for the women’s Volleyball gold medal at the XXI Central American and Caribbean Games on Friday as the tournament concluded in Mayaguez. Both teams have used the tournament as preparation for this year’s FIVB World Grand Prix which they are both taking part in. It is the third gold medal, and fifth overall in the quadrennial games, for the Dominican side who previously won the top place in the 1946, 1962, 2002 and 2006 editions. The bronze medal went to Costa Rica, one of the NORCECA teams qualified to this year's FIVB World Championship, who defeated Trinidad & Tobago in four sets. “I am so happy with this victory and we achieved our objective of winning a third consecutive gold medal,” Milagros Cabral said. “I think it is about time to open the gate to another Dominican generation of players who are showing their talent.” “It was a great final match and I want to give credit to the coaching staff and especially to a player like Gina Mambru who replaced our star player Bethania de la Cruz and did a great job,” coach Marcos Kwiek said. Dominican Republic v Puerto Rico Dominican Republic out-dueled Puerto Rico in a five-set clash (25-19, 19-25, 25-19, 24-26, 15-4) to claim a third consecutive women’s Volleyball gold medal. The blocking of the Dominican Republic was a key for the victory with an 18-9 margin led by Annerys Vargas and Prisilla Rivera who recorded six and five respectively. Rivera charted 21 points while Vargas and Gina Mambru each notched 15 points with Mambru recording five serving aces. Milagros Cabral contributed 11 points. Puerto Ricans Aury Vruz and Sarai Alvarez registered 20 and 17 points respectively. Costa Rica v Trinidad & Tobago Costa Rica claimed the bronze medal with a 3-1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-16, 25-21) victory over Trinidad & Tobago on Friday. The Costa Ricans, a team who have qualified for the 2010 FIVB World Championship in Japan, had Verania Willis as their top scorer with 16 points including two blocks. Mariela Quesada added 11 tallies and Angela Willis contributed three blocks among her 10 points. Trinidadian Kelly-Anne Billingy registered a match-high 17 points, Krystle Esdelle added 12 and Channon Thompson and Sinead Jack each compiled 11 points. Mexico v Guatemala Mexico defeated Guatemala in straight sets (25-13, 25-22, 25-11) to finish in fifth place. Samantha Bricio, Xitlali Herrera and Claudia Rodriguez each compiled 11 points for Mexico, who totaled nine blocks, including four by Rodriguez. Guatemalan Diana Arias collected seven points. Nicaragua v Barbados Nicaragua finished in seventh position after a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-20) victory over Barbados. Bertha Fierro scored 18 points to lead the winning side while Amalia Hernandez and Hellen Traña added 13 and 10 points respectively. Shari Matthews registered 11 tallies for the defeated side.
