Corozal draws first blood in Puerto Rican Women’s Finals

American Destinee Hooker scored an incredible 43 points as Corozal claimed victory in the first match of the best-of-seven series
San Juan, Puerto Rico, May 7, 2010 – Corozal came from two sets down to beat defending champions Toa Baja 3-2 (19-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-19, 16-14) to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven final series of the Puerto Rican Women’s Superior League.

American Destinee Hooker recorded an astonishing 43 points with Shonda Cole added 21 whilst in leading the attack from the 16-time champions of the league.
A spike by Hooker eventually broke the tension in the final set with Cole sealing the victory by landing another kill.

“I think we kept the composure after losing the first two sets,” Hooker said after the match. “We maintained the focus and came out with the victory.”

“It was amazing,” coach Kike Ruiz said while praising the performance of Hooker and the way the team reacted. “Starting in the third set our blocking improved and we went forward behind the awesome performance of Destinee.”

Jessica Candelario and Vilmarie Mojica contributed to the victory with eight and seven points apiece with each player recording five blocks.

Canadian Stacey Gordon led Toa Baja’s scores with 24 points, Graciela Marquez added 19 and American Jennifer Jones scored 17.

The final series continues on Saturday at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum in Puerto Rico’s capital.
