Bernardinho's Rio de Janeiro team forced to spend night in stadium

The Maracanãzinho stadium where Bernardinho was coaching the Rio de Janeiro team was completely flooded due to the torrential rain that has hit the city

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, April 7, 2010 – The torrential rains which caused chaos in Rio de Janeiro for the past three days have also hit Bernardinho, coach of the Brazil men’s team, and his Rio de Janeiro club side, who were forced to spend Monday night at the team’s Maracanãzinho stadium after the floods that hit the city flooded the complex.

With the Maracanã area which surrounds the gym completely flooded, players and coaching staff had to spend the night on foam mats which surrounded the court in an effort to avoid the water that swamped the area.

Four players, including striker Carol Gattaz, tried leaving the gym during the downpour, which began at 5pm local time on Monday evening, but were caught in the streets due to the flooding. The other athletes and coaching staff slept on site. According to assistant coach Helio Griner, there was over one meter of water in the gym on Tuesday morning with the first row of seats being completely submerged.

The team eventually managed to leave the gym at around 12pm on Tuesday after spending 20 hours inside.

They originally arrived at the site at 5:30pm on Monday to train for their upcoming match against Sao Caetano, which has now been cancelled. The court then began to flood and despite the side’s efforts they were forced up into the next tier of the stadium at 2am to avoid the water.
