Former Portuguese Volleyball star passes away at 41 years of age

Porto, Portugal, October 30, 2009 - With deep sorrow the Portuguese Volleyball Federation mourns the death of Ana Cristina Carmo Sarmento Vieira Pereira one of the most outstanding Volleyball and Beach Vollleyball players of that country, who passed away on Friday after a long illness.

Mrs. Pereira was a true professional with great sportive and human qualities and through her career represented three clubs, namely Leixões SC, Castelo da Maia GC and Boavista FC, in her home country.

She was born on March 8, 1968 and her parents had been also great Volleyball players.

As a Volleyball player, she captained the Portuguese national team and won 11 national titles. In Beach Volleyball Ana Cristina Pereira partnered with Maria José Schuller to notch six National Championships. She finished in ninth place at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and her best finish on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour was a fourth place finish at the Dalian Open in China that same year.

After the Sydney Olympics, the Portuguese Volleyball Federation awarded Ana Cristina Pereira with its highest distinction, the “Osório” Award, for her outstanding dedication to Volleyball.

The FIVB joins, the CEV, the Portuguese Federation and the relatives of Mrs. Pereira in mourning her passing with deep sadness and sincere condolences.
