Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, January 6, 2009 – Volleyball Canada has named Arnd “Lupo” Ludwig as new head coach of the women’s national team. Ludwig, who currently resides in Dresden, Germany, and is in his 10th season as a professional women’s head coach in Germany’s top club division, agreed over the holidays to a four-year contract.

Ludwig said, “I am very proud and honoured that Volleyball Canada has chosen me as the next head coach of the women's national team. I am looking forward to working with Team Canada and the challenge to reach London 2012.  I watched the team practice this summer and I think the women have the potential to reach this goal. It takes a lot of hard work, discipline and I will do my best to bring Canadian volleyball to the next level.”

Having experienced women’s international volleyball first hand as the assistant coach with the German Women’s team from 1999-2002, Ludwig’s resume includes appearances at the 2002 FIVB World Grand Prix in Asia, 2001 European Championship in Bulgaria and 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.

Executive Director of Volleyball Canada John-Paul Cody-Cox said, “Following a difficult selection process where numerous international quality coaching applications were considered, we are very happy to announce today the appointment of Mr. Ludwig as head coach of the women's indoor national team. As the new face and technical leader of the women's national team we believe Lupo's past experiences and qualifications will help the team improve upon the on-court success it has recently experienced. The first task this coming summer is qualification for the 2010 World Championships, and work will begin immediately with the new head coach to put together the best program plan possible to ensure the team reaches this important benchmark.”
