CEV seminar lays cornerstone of another record-breaking season
They were briefed on the latest changes to the Official Regulations of Europe’s elite club competition and on a number of innovative actions that will mark the 2015 season.
"Our classes started already on Friday afternoon," Mrs Ooms said, "and there our focus was on those who are joining our family for the first time or returning back after missing one or more editions. Shortly before the Gala and the drawing of lots, we wanted to convey to them the spirit of this competition, its quintessence and also very demanding standards, since we all know that they will have a lot of work to accomplish. Today, on the other hand, we had a very large, probably more experienced audience, which I hope will nevertheless take home some useful suggestions and hints in order to start their preparations for the coming season. The first matches will be played only in early November, but time flies, and so the start of the 2015 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League is just round the corner."
The annual Champions League seminar followed up on an e-learning course which all participants had completed before traveling to Vienna. There was also a test where their knowledge of the Official Regulations was assessed. In this way, the lecturers were able to focus on the most relevant changes which will accompany the start of the 2015 season.
Emilio Spirito, the CEO of DataProject, a long-time partner of the CEV, introduced a series of technological applications which clubs will be able to use for their home matches. These include the 'lite score', which is a display placed on the scorer’s table summing up the key information about the match taking place, as well as an extra display board which can be set up in sports halls to showcase stats and other relevant information in order to improve the spectators’ engagement. Tablets will be provided to coaches as well, so they can better follow the development of the match via the e-score sheet. The use of the video challenge system was also discussed. This innovative application was already in place by the time the 2014 Final Four tournaments were held last March in Baku and Ankara. The clubs participating in the 2015 edition of the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League will be allowed to use that same system also for their home matches, after prior approval by the CEV.
"All these actions are in line with the CEV’s push for innovation, as we want the sport to evolve with the times and to exploit the latest technology in order to make it more spectacular and attractive to the audience, and especially to the young generations," said CEV President André Meyer.
An additional highlight of the seminar was provided by another long-time partner of the CEV, the sportsman media group. The Munich-based agency, which has been marketing the TV rights of the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League since the 2008/09 season, disclosed the key points of a multi-media concept which is likely to change the CEV’s everyday communications and interaction with fans and media alike, by exploiting the huge potential offered by social media networks.
Andreas Knupfer of REPUCOM, one of the global leaders in sports marketing research, reviewed facts and figures of the outstanding TV coverage registered throughout the 2014 season, where an audience of 59 million followed the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League. The matches were televised by as many as 58 television channels, thereby reaching out to a global audience, including volleyball fans from Asia, the Middle East, and South America.
"Today we shared plenty of information," ECC President Riet Ooms concluded, "and what I liked the most is that our seminar wasn’t just a series of academic classes, but rather an exchange of views and experiences with those, the clubs, who really set up this volleyball show we are all so proud of.
