Vienna, Austria, June 27, 2014 - The 2015 edition of the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League kicked off on Friday night with the Drawing of Lots to assign teams in the preliminary pool competition set to go underway in early November.

A total of 28 men’s and 20 women’s teams will start their quests for making it to the last and most exciting stage of the tournament scheduled for late March or early April next year.

The Drawing of Lots was held at the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, concurrently with the annual European Volleyball Gala co-hosted by the CEV and the Austrian Volleyball Federation. The winners of the elite club competition will once again get the right to represent Europe at the next edition of the FIVB Volleyball Club World Championships.

Drawing of Lots - Women

The 20 teams participating in the women’s competition were drawn first after being pre-seeded as per the latest European ranking list. The composition of the five preliminary pools are:

Pool A: Dinamo Kazan (RUS), Rabita Baku (AZE), Chemik Police (POL), Agel Prostejov (CZE)

Pool B: Fenerbahce Istanbul (TUR), Azeryol Baku (AZE), Nantes VB (FRA), Stiinta Bacau (ROU)

After a double round robin accounting for 60 matches in total, the first, second and the two third placed teams with the best score will progress to the Playoffs 12. The League Round of the women’s competition will start on November 11 and end on January 28, 2015. The winners of the Playoffs 12 will then move on to the Playoffs 6 and vie there for a spot in the Final Four tournament which is due to take place on April 4 to 5, 2015.

Russia’s Dinamo Kazan, the reigning European and world champions, will be trying to retain their crown but will not have it easy playing already in the group stage Azerbaijan’s Rabita Baku, their opponent in the semifinal of the 2014 edition.

Drawing of Lots – Men

After some show acts that also included performance by Norisha Campbell, a former volleyball player turned singer who delighted the audience with her stage presence and voice, it was then the turn of the 28 teams participating in the men’s competition to be drawn and assigned to the seven preliminary pools of the League Round.  The composition of the seven preliminary pools are:

The League Round will start on November 4 and end on January 27, after a double round robin. The first placed team of each pool as well as the five second placed with the best score will continue their adventure in the Playoffs 12. The three winners of the Playoffs 6 will then join the hosts of the Final Four tournament which is scheduled for March 28 to 29 and where the next kings of European volleyball will be crowned.

Last year’s champions Belogorie Belgorod will be among the hottest contenders once more for that crown and will start their quest for a second consecutive title – and fourth overall – in the group of death, which also includes Italy’s champions Cucine Lube Treia and the winners of the 2014 CEV Volleyball Cup and Challenge Cup, Paris Volley and Fenerbahce Grundig Istanbul, respectively.

“I believe that tonight we laid the foundations for another successful edition of our flagship competition,” CEV President André Meyer commented after the Drawing of Lots. “Year after year the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League continues to mesmerize thousands of people across Europe and the world, so I am confident that with this impressive line-up and the composition of the pools that resulted from the Drawing of Lots we will add yet another chapter to our success story.”
