Line-up for women’s Euro 2015 shaping up

Exciting clashes in front of excited fans determined six more finalists for the 2015 CEV Volleyball European Championship - Women

Luxembourg, Luxembourg, June 2, 2014 - With the second round of qualifications for the 2015 CEV Volleyball European Championship - Women now completed, the line-up of participants in the Final Round next year in Belgium and the Netherlands is already shaping up.

In all, 13 of the 16 finalists are already known as well as the six teams that will battle for the last three spots.

As organisers, the Belgian and the Dutch national teams already have their reserved places in Euro 2015.  Based on the final standings at the 2013 CEV Volleyball European Championship, five more countries – Russia, Germany, Serbia, Croatia and Italy – did not need to play any qualifications in order to appear at the 2015 finals.

Six more national teams won their pools in the second qualification round to join the above seven as ticketholders for the championship in Belgium and the Netherlands.  These are Turkey, Poland, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania.

Chronologically, Poland was the first team to qualify as the battles in Pool B finished more than a week ago.  However, it was Romania and Turkey that became the most categorical pool winners.  These two squads topped Pools F and A respectively with perfect records of 18 points from six matches.  The Romanians lost only one set in this entire campaign, while the Turks have lost two.  Poland and the Czech Republic also went through this qualification round unbeaten.  Interestingly, Bulgaria finished first in Pool D after losing to closest rival Azerbaijan at home, but then defeating them on the last competition day away in Baku.

The Pool E race was by far the most dramatic with the top two spots hotly contested by three teams.  The current standings shuffled almost after every match with all questions left to be answered by the very last game.  Hungary, France and Israel ended up with 12 points each with Hungary qualifying for the finals and France moving on to the next round on set ratio differences.

In addition to France, the five other pool runners-up – Belarus, Ukraine, Slovenia, Azerbaijan and Slovakia – will get one last chance to earn the right to participate in Belgium and the Netherlands.  In home and away matches in the third and last qualification round, slated between May 22 and 31, 2015, France will face Slovenia, Azerbaijan will measure up to Slovakia and Ukraine will meet its neighbours Belarus.

The Final Round in Belgium and the Netherlands will take place from September 25 to October 4, 2015.
