Uganda's Malinga and Isiagi tipped for bright volleyball careers
Kampala, Uganda, May 28, 2014 - Kathberth Malinga and Erias Isiagi were the youngest beach volleyball pair at the recent CAVB U19 Beach Cup.
The pair, who represented Uganda at the recently concluded CAVB Cup in Kampala, also earned a ticket to play at this year’s FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World Championship in Portugal.
The pair’s coach Sam Meya believes that the sky is the limit for these two teenagers.
“The time I have been with them you can say they are perfect for each other,” Meya said.
“We need to have strong minded and technically gifted players for the future and these two can be that as we also search for other players,” he added.
Malinga’s height gives him a better reach on the block, while Isiagi, though slightly shorter, is not easy to beat on court cover.
The pair faced competition from Kenya, Rwanda, Egypt and Namibia, teams that were better exposed in terms of facilities and technical support, especially Egypt.
“This tournament is good exposure for us moving forward,” said Malinga. “If we can secure qualification to the world championships then doors will open for us,” he said earlier in the competition.
The pair qualified for the FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World Championship ahead of Kenya, Namibia and Egypt.
