Americans Hughes and Engle triumph in Guatemala

USA's Christal Engle (left) and Heather Hughes now head to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico following their victory in Guatemala on Sunday
Guatemala City, Guatemala, May 4, 2014.- Heather Hughes and Christal Engle of USA-B triumphed at the Gatorade Guatemala BVB Tournament with a victory over Karen Cope and Natalia Alfaro of Costa Rica by 2-1 (21-14, 24-26, 15-0).

Hughes/Engle took the gold without playing the third set, as the Costa Rican Alfaro could not continue playing after suffering a bee sting. The match had a splendid display of Costa Rica’s defensive skills and the Americans didn’t celebrate as a sign of fair play following the misfortune of their opponents.

“We feel bad for them and it doesn’t feel the same winning this way. Costa Rica had a great tournament, showing incredible defense, even so we’re content with the gold” Engle said.

Hughes praised the efforts and improvement of the Costa Ricans saying we faced "we played them in Cayman Islands and here they played a lo better; I believe this is the best we’ve seen them”.

The duo now moves to compete in the Puerto Vallarta FIVB Open next weekend.

In their semifinal, Hughes/Engle were also extended to three sets before overtaking Cubans Lianma Flores/Leila Martinez 21-16, 22-24, 15-9. Cope/Alfaro upset Tealle Hunkus/Kimberly McGiven-Dicello of USA-A, winners of the gold at Cayman Islands,  winning 2-1 (21-13, 11-21, 15-13).

Hunkus/McGiven-Dicello still made the podium winning the bronze medal against Flores/Martinez 2-0 (21-15, 21-17).
