Rosario wins the women’s Cup of Portugal
was a competitive final match decided by a tie breaker with Rosario, the
debuting team from Porto, coming out on top after being down by two sets.
Their win end the victorious streak of Ribeirense Lajes Do Pico, a team which had won the previous three editions of the tournament. The rookie team achieved an exciting U-turn to claim their final victory 3-2 (21-25, 19-25, 25-18, 25-19, 15-7).
“We have a very young team
that may have dealt poorly with the pressure in the opening sets, but we fought
our way back into the game,” said Rosario’s captain Vanessa Rodrigues.
Paulo Barreto, Ribeirense’s coach, pointed out some reasons for the loss, “Rosario is a very difficult opponent and they merit their victory. We were up by two sets and we failed mentally. We have shown our good game, but we failed in keeping our focus. I am pleased despite the defeat because our team fought for every point, trying to overcome some issues that we had during the season, like some of our home matches which were not played due to the absence of the opponents. This is not an excuse for losing but maybe we needed more competition to improve our strategy.”
Rosario’s coach Manuel Almeida commented, “We could not handle the pressure very well in the beginning and our game reflected that. After being down by two sets, we began to play with less pressure and we improved a lot. I was kind of waiting for that to happen as this team is very young and it is our first year together as a senior team. We were also very fortunate in some key moments of the match.”
