IOC video shows the power behind the five-ring show

Volleyball and beach volleyball were two of the most popular sports at the London 2012 Olympic Games
Lausanne, Switzerland, December 11, 2013 – The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has produced a video to explain the who, what and how behind the organisation of the summer and winter Olympic Games.

It answers questions such as who organises accommodation, venues and transport and who provides the money and where the profits from an Olympic Games go.

The FIVB has been involved with the summer Olympic Games since volleyball was added to the programme at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Hosts Japan won the women’s gold medal and the Soviet Union won the men’s.

Russia’s men matched their 1964 counterparts at the most recent Olympic Games, London 2012, by winning gold after they had come back against Brazil in the gold medal match. The South American women didn’t suffer such a fate in their final though and comfortably defeated USA, as they did at Beijing 2008.

Beach Volleyball was added to the Olympic Games at Atlanta 1996, where USA’s Karch Kiraly and Kent Steffes won the men’s gold medal and Brazil’s Jackie Silva and Sandra Pires won the women’s.

Most recently in London Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor of the US won a third consecutive Olympic gold, while Germany’s Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann became the first Europeans to win a beach volleyball gold.

This year beach volleyball will make its debut at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games. Volleyball was part of the programme for the inaugural tournament in Singapore in 2010 where Belgium won the girl’s gold and Cuba the boy’s.
