Mexico and USA to play for top place in Pool B

Mexico City, México, August 21, 2013 – Mexico and United States improved to 2-0 in Pool B of the VIII Men’s Pan American Cup after victories over Dominican Republic and Trinidad & Tobago respectively on Tuesday.

The two teams will clash on Wednesday for the first place of the pool and a direct pass to the semifinal round.

Argentina overcame Puerto Rico in four sets and will play longtime South American rivals Brazil for the top place in Pool A.

Mexico won a close match in four sets with Dominican Republic while USA cruised to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Trinidad & Tobago.

“We are glad for the result and ready to play USA,” Mexican captain Jorge Quiñones stated.

“These matches are always tough and tight,” Dominican captain Jose Caceres said. “They showed what they can do and now we just have to move on.”

Argentina 3, Puerto Rico 1
Gustavo Vaca and Agustin Ramonda each scored 14 points as Argentina overcame Puerto Rico in a 3-1 (18-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-18) victory during the second day of actions. Ezequiel Palacios contributed 13 points for the South American team, while Puerto Ricans Ezequiel Cruz, Roberto Muniz and Mannix Roman had 14, 12 and11 points respectively.

United States 3, Trinidad & Tobago 0
The United States defeated Trinidad and Tobago in straight sets (25-14, 25-10, 25-20) to earn their second victory in as many days. Joseph Sunder scored 10 points for the American unit that faced a Trinidadian team that improved in the third set, especially with Simon Blake, who finished 8 points. Also the United States marked a big difference serving 10 aces, three of them by Daniel McDonnell.

Mexico 3, Dominican Republic 1
Mexico defeated the Dominican Republic in a very tight match decided with a 3-1 score in favor of the host team (18-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-23). Dominican captain Jose Miguel Caceres scored 22 points and Elvis Contreras closed with 17, while Mexican Nestor Orellana finished with 12. Tomas Aguilera and Jesus Valdes registered 10 points apiece for the local squad that now has a 2-0 record and plays against United States on Wednesday.
