Luxembourg City, Luxembourg, August 6, 2013 – Only a couple of days after a memorable beach volleyball tournament attended by 150,000 fans came to a close in Klagenfurt, the CEV is pleased to announce that the 2016 CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship Final will take place in the Swiss city of Biel.

The announcement comes after Swiss Volley, the city of Biel and promoter 4sports & Entertainment Ltd agreed on a three-year strategic cooperation with the focal event the 2016 CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship Final in Biel.

The 2016 European Championship Final will be preceded by two Masters Tournaments that are also set to take place in Biel in 2014 and 2014.

“We are evidently pleased with this partnership especially as it involves a long-term project, which is likely to help us build on the great results of the past seasons” said CEV President André Meyer.

“Switzerland is a country that is known for being fond of beach volleyball and this cooperation will be instrumental to the development of beach volleyball in this country as the young generations will be mesmerised by the unique ambiance this sport stands out for,” he added.

“The city of Biel did submit a very ambitious and convincing project whose long-term goals, support and complement our strategy and vision to promote and further establish beach volleyball in our country,” said Swiss Volley President, Christoph Stern.

Biel/Bienne is Switzerland’s largest bilingual city around 30 km from Bern on the shores of Lake Biel. The canton of Bern has a great deal of experience hosting sports events, with the Beach Volleyball Masters and European Championship in addition to the 2008 UEFA European Football Championship, the 2009 IIHF World Ice Hockey Championship, the 2011 ISU European Figure Skating Championship and the 2013 Mountain Bike European Championship.

The venue of these much anticipated events was recently inspected by EBVC Secretary, Henrique Gomes who was impressed by the quality of the local infrastructure and the general concept worked out by the organisers. The idyllic, beautiful and easily accessible location on the southern side of the Jura mountains is an exclusive and unique platform from where to host this series of world-class events.
