Regional Development Centre in Chennai to be named after Dr. Adityan
Chennai, India, July 23, 2013 - The General Council of the Volleyball Federation of India passed a resolution to name the Regional Development Centre in Chennai, India in memory of former President, the late Padmashri Dr. B. Sivanthi Adityan.
Dr. Adityan, widely regarded as the godfather of Indian volleyball, was responsible for bring the Development Centre to Chennai for its efficient running. Naming the Centre after him is an appropriate recognition of his services to the development of volleyball in India and the Asian region in general.
He first became an FIVB Board of Administration member in 1984 after he was voted in at the FIVB World Congress in Long Beach, Los Angeles and was then elected as FIVB Executive Vice-President in the FIVB World Congress held in Tokyo in 1998. His last appearance came at the 2012 Congress in Anaheim where he received the honour of being named an Honorary Executive Vice-President.
During his time with the FIVB Dr. Adityan was an FIVB Executive Committee member, member of numerous FIVB Commissions, President of the Volleyball Federation of India, Life President of the India Olympic Association and Vice President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).
The International Olympic Committee presented him with the Sports and Study Award in 1987 and in 1995 the IOC conferred on him the Olympic Order of Merit for his contributions to sports and education in India.
