Kerri Walsh out of debut US tournament

Walsh, who recently made her 2013 beach volleyball season debut at the Gstaad Grand Slam with partner April Ross, was scheduled to play with Whitney Pavlik in Long Beach.

Lausanne, Switzerland, July 22, 2013 – The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour returns to the United States for the first time in a decade this week, but without one of the country’s biggest beach volleyball stars. Three-time Olympic gold medallist Kerri Walsh has withdrawn from the Long Beach Grand Slam due to injury.

Walsh, who recently made her 2013 beach volleyball season debut at the Gstaad Grand Slam with new partner April Ross, was scheduled to play with USA’s Whitney Pavlik in Long Beach. Walsh cited an abdominal strain would keep her from competing in the double-gender tournament.

The Gstaad Grand Slam, which ran from July 9 to 14 in Switzerland, was Walsh’s first tournament on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour since the 2012 Stare Jablonki Grand Slam, which came a week after she had won her third Olympic gold at London 2012. Since then, Walsh gave birth to her third child in April.

Walsh was scheduled to play alongside Whitney Pavlik in the Long Beach Grand Slam. Pavlik will instead play with Annett "Nettie" Davis.

Walsh and Pavlik are still scheduled to play in the World Series of Beach Volleyball on July 27 (during the Men’s FIVB Grand Slam Semi & Finals) in Long Beach.

The inaugural event features feature the two top international teams facing off for the chance to compete in the World Series Cup Finals against the winner of a duel between the top two U.S. teams – including Kerri Walsh Jennings, Jennifer Kessy, April Ross, Phil Dalhausser, Sean Rosenthal, Todd Rogers and Jake Gibb. The winners of each side compete for their country for the right to take home the World Series Cup.

Ross will compete with long-term partner Jennifer Kessy in Long Beach.

Walsh and Ross are expected to pair up full time toward the end of 2013, with the intention of going through to the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games together.
