Vietnam in final round of Asian qualification for 2014 World Champs

Vietnam secured their vacancy to the final round of qualifications to the 2014 FIVB Women's Volleyball World Championship on Sunday

Quangtri, Vietnam, June 16, 2013 - Hosts Vietnam reigned supreme in the 2014 FIVB Women's  Volleyball World Championship Qualification Zonal Round South East Asia on Sunday to secure their berth for the Final Round.

Four teams, Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar and Vietnam, showed their mettle in the three-day tournament held from June 14 to 16 at the Huonghoa Gym here, vying for the lone ticket to compete in the 10-team Final Round.

Japan, China, South Korea, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Australia and New Zealand have already made the cut for the Asian final qualification round. As Vietnam have already joined the eligible seven sides in the Final Round, only two more teams, one from the Central Zone and the other from the Eastern Zones, will be eligible.

The Asian final qualification round for the 2014 FIVB World Championship are due to take place in September in two host countries. The ten participating teams will be split into two groups of five, Pool A in Japan and Pool B in China. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the next year's World Championship Finals which will be hosted by Italy.

Vietnam – currently ranked No.93 in the FIVB World rankings – were in dazzling form against their rivals. Coached by Thai Aphisak Rakchartyingcheep the team played before a large crowd of home supporters. The Vietnamese side got off to a flying start with the sensational straight-set win (25-9, 25-11, 25-18) in the curtain-raiser on Friday against inexperienced Philippines, who is ranked 112th in the world.

With the likes of powerful Do Thi Minh, Pham Thi Kim Hue and Pham Thi Yen, Vietnam proved too strong for the challengers. Many of the key players on the Vietnam team have played for LienViet PostBank Club, which finished an impressive fifth at the recent Asian Women's Club Championship in Dac Lac and captured the crown at the LienViet PostBank Cup International Tournament in Bac Ninh.

After a successful opener, the hosts repeated their feat by pulling off a dramatic 3-1 (29-27, 20-25, 25-15, 25-20) victory over closest rivals Indonesia before ending  Myanmar's hopes of advancing with comfortable straight-set win (25-11, 25-8, 25-10) in their Sunday encounter. Vietnam eventually captured the title with nine points from three successive wins.

Indonesia, ranked No. 107 in the FIVB World rankings finished in second place overall with six points from two wins against one loss. The Indonesians outclassed Myanmar 3-1 (25-21, 25-17, 25-15) in their first match, lost to Vietnam in the second match and finally beat the Filipinos in straight sets with a score of (25-20, 25-19, 25-22).

The Philippines came in third place with three points from one win against two losses. The lone victory came in their second match against Myanmar, which saw them beat their opponents 3-1 (20-25, 25-14, 25-10, 25-17). Myanmar, coached by Thai Banterng Kaopong, did not win a match in the three-day meet and return home with a disappointing fourth place.

Vietnam now advance to the Asian final qualification round to be held in September.
