Brazil beat Italy to take home the Alassio Cup
Alassio, Italy, June 9, 2013 – Olympic champions, Brazil have taken the Alassio Cup after beating Italy in three sets 3-0 (18-25, 17-25, 10-25).
Italy failed to win
even a set in spite of a good start.
On the Italian side, players Indre Sorokaite and Valentina Tirozzi controlled the beginning of the match but the Brazilian side worked together to stop the Italian duo, closing the first set at 25-18.
The Brazilians blazed ahead once again the second set giving the Italian side one less point than in the first set. In the third and final set, Brazil consolidated its absolute domination in the match, leaving almost nothing to Martina Guiggi and her team-mates winning the set (25-10).
Brazil’s Fernanda Garay was the best scorer from Brazil with 14 points, followed by Monique Marinho Pavao with 11 while Indre Sorokaite was the best on the Italian side with 13 points.
In the bronze medal match earlier in the day, Turkey defeated Japan 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-22), securing third place at the tournament.
The 2013 Alassio Cup is a friendly women’s tournament featuring four of the world’s best teams: Italy (host), Brazil, Japan and Turkey. The tournament serves as an important preparation for upcoming major tournaments like the World Grand Prix and the Women’s European Championship.
