Slovenia win Copa Unique crown in Peru

Lima, Peru, May 27, 2013 - The U18 Slovenia girls’ team defeated hosts Peru in straights sets (25-23, 25-22, 25-17) to take the 2013 Copa Unique crown for the first time ever.

The event  –  an international tournament with a view to the Girls’ U18 World Championship in Thailand –  took place at the Eduardo Dibos Gymnasium in Lima-Peru with the final being held on Sunday.

Although the Peruvians came close to winning the first two sets, it was Slovenia who made a difference from the start, beginning the first set with a 5-1 lead that the teammates of Natalia Malaga reduced until 25-23, in 24 minutes. The second set was decisive in the mind of the Peruvian downturn. They lead by five-points to the 22 points, but the errors allowed Slovenia to recover, as setter Eva Mori triumphed. In 25 minutes, Slovenia got a 25-23 that baffled the Peruvian fans. Slovenia gained confidence and ended the tour title set 25-17 in 22 minutes.

Angela Leyva from Peru was the MVP of the tournament.

In an earlier game, Thailand defeated the Dominican Republic in five sets to close the Unique Cup with the bronze medal.

The teams are also in preparation for the FIVB Girls' U18 World Championship, to be held from July 26 to August 4 in Thailand.
