Belogorie top off the season with Russia Superleague title
In last Saturday’s final Belogorie started out with two 3-2 away wins which helped lay the foundation for a possible home triumph. They stormed to a 2-0 lead at the start of the match, never losing their composure much to the delight of the thousands of fans in attendance at the Cosmos sports hall. With this win, Belogorie caps a memorable season which also includes winning Russia’s national cup in December 2012.
“I am very happy that we could eventually claim the title eight years after our last triumph here in my hometown,” said Belogorie’s head coach Gennady Shipulin. “We have been working very hard since the start of the season and we always believed in our chances to go for the best result. I am grateful to all those who have shared this mission and goal because many people were sceptical about our team’s chances of winning the national championship. On the other hand, I always knew we had a shot and in the end we would become champions.”
Team captain and 2012 Olympic champion Taras Khtey stressed, “We were prepared for a long and demanding battle and I am happy that we could win in straight sets. We have cemented our role and showed that we are the undisputed champions of Russia. We have been working for this since the start of the season and we eventually made it. I am happy.”
