Brazil and Puerto Rico to play for U-18 Pan Am title

The Puerto Ricans were able to celebrate after an intense two-hour battle with Dominican Republic in their semifinals on Friday

Guatemala City, Guatemala, May 4, 2013. - Brazil and Puerto Rico will play for the title of the second edition of the U-18 Girls Pan American Cup after succeeding in their outings on Friday’s semifinals.

The Brazilians were the first team to reach the gold medal match with a straight set (27-25, 25-21, 25-19) victory over Argentina while Puerto Rico overcame Dominican Republic in five intense sets (25-19, 25-23, 19-25, 15-25, 15-9).

“We are going after the gold,” Brazilian Lorenne Geraldo said. “Our serves really helped is in the difficult moments against Argentina.”

“We worked hard for this,” Puerto Rican Wilmarie Rivera expressed. “Our team has become stronger after winning the ticket to Thailand.”

In the consolation round for positions 5 to 8, Chile defeated Colombia 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 26-24, 25-16) while Peru beat hosts Guatemala in straight sets (25-8, 25-12, 25-14).

Brazil v Argentina
The Brazilians earned the right to play for the Pan Am title with an advantage in aces by 7-2 and also a stronger defense at the net with a 15-10 difference in blocking. Argentina pushed Brazil hard but not enough and they lost energy in the third set. Drussyla Costa registered 16 points, 3 of them aces as Brazil’s leading scorer while Elina Rodriguez with 15 points was the best for Argentina.

Puerto Rico v Dominican Republic
It was an intense match that lasted two hours and five minutes where the Puerto Ricans had to deal with a remarkable comeback by the Dominicans. The winners held a margin of 19-14 in blocking and 3-1 in service points. The offensive chart of Puerto Rico was led by Patricia Montero with 19 points while Genesis Miranda and Julymar Otero contributed 16 and 11 points. The best scorer for Dominican Republic was Brayelin Martinez with 26 points followed by Gaila Gonzalez with 15.

Chile v Colombia
Chile beat Colombia and will play for the fifth place. The Chileans held a 10-3  margin in the serving category while the Colombians had a slight 12-10 advantage in blocks. Chile’s Catalina Melo finished with an impressive tournament-high 33 points. Amanda Caneo was the best scorer for Colombia with 23 points.

Peru v Guatemala
The home team wasn’t able to stop Peru’s devastating attacks as the South Americans totaled 37 points in attacks to 11 of the defeated side. The Peruvians dominated in service points 14-1 and will play Chile for fifth place. Barbara Briceño led Peru with 11 points followed by Mayra Sandoval with 10.
