Argentina and Puerto Rico join the semifinalists

Argentina will meet Brazil in the semifinals of the U-18 Girls' Pan American Cup following a victory over Chile on Thursday in Guatemala

Guatemala City, Guatemala, May 2, 2013 – Teams of Argentina and Puerto Rico joined Dominican Republic and Brazil as semifinalists of the U-18 Girls Pan American Cup following their victories on Thursday at Teodoro Palacios Flores in Guatemala.

Argentina defeated Chile in four sets (25-18, 28-30, 25-17, 25-18) while Puerto Rico edged Peru in five frames (25-18, 18-25, 21-25, 25-20, 15-9).

Friday’s semifinals feature a South American battle between Brazil and Argentina followed by a contest of NORCECA rivals Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.

In the consolation round for the 5-8 positions, Colombia plays against Chile and hosts Guatemala takes on Peru.

Argentina v Chile
Argentina depended on their strong blocking scoring with a 14-8 advantage against Chile, but not before losing an epic second set by 28-30.  Sol Piccolo registered a match-high 25 points, including 3 aces while Camila Hiruela contributed with 14 and Elina Rodriguez with 12 points for the winners.  For Chile, Catalina Melo was the best with 21 points, followed by Laura Sotomayor and Catalina Pulgar with 15 and 13 respectively.

Puerto Rico v Peru
One of the keys for Puerto Rico’s dramatic victory was the 18-8 advantage established in the blocking category. Genesis Miranda and Patricia Montero led the winners with 23 points and 21 points respectively. Peru’s top scorers were Barbara Briceño with 13 points, Arnao Urrutia with 11 and Katherine Regalado with 14 tallies.
