Volleyball Canada Breaks Participation Records for 2013 Canadian Open Championships
“The popularity of the Canadian Open Volleyball Championships continues to grow every year with more and more teams registering to take part,” said VC President Hugh Wong. “We unfortunately have to turn away teams in some categories because we simply do not have enough courts to accommodate them. We hate to do that, but it’s also a positive problem to have. Every year we look for larger venues and different formats for the Championships to ensure that everyone who wants to play in our Championships can play.”
Volleyball is one of the most popular sports among young women. A total of 523 teams or approximately 6,200 participants are young women aged 13-18 years of age and the popularity of the sport continues to grow among this demographic. The Open Championships also include the participation of over 1,500 coaches and referees and it takes countless volunteers in each location to help organize and stage each event.
“We are fortunate to have dedicated hosts who partner with VC in each location to stage quality events,” noted Domestic Competitions Director Chrissy Benz, “Our Provincial Associations, clubs and local communities play key roles in making these events possible.”
