Georgetown, Guyana, April 4, 2013 – The Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) recently recognised FIVB coach, Mr Gregory Rambarran for his contribution to sport and volleyball development in Guyana. The award was presented to Mr Rambarran – president of the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) and vice-president of the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) – at the GOA’s Appreciation & Awards Ceremony at the Georgetown Club in Guyana.

Although Mr Rambarran has been involved in various sports since the early seventies, he has held a particular passion for the game of volleyball. While attending Teachers Training College he was the captain of the volleyball team and participated in the Inter-Varsity Games in Suriname in 1976.

Mr Rambarran was a physical education teacher from 1972 to 1994 and is widely credited with reviving the sport of volleyball in Berbice. Through his efforts Berbice has produced the top team in the country, has the most affiliated clubs and has held the most competitions for men and women. At the GOA’s Award Ceremony, GVF President Lenox Shuffler described the awardee as a “multi-talented, exceptional individual”.

In 1987, Mr Rambarran received his FIVB Level 1 Coach accreditation and has refereed countless competitions in the country.

He has also been actively involved in the administration of volleyball in Guyana for over 37 years, serving as secretary, and later as president of the BVA as well as vice-president of the GVF.
