AJF Bastardo wins its first ever Cup of Portugal

Coimbra, Portugal, March 25, 2013 - Associação de Jovens da Fonte do Bastardo (AJFB) claimed its first ever Cup of Portugal by downing Vitória SC (VSC) 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-21) at the competition’s final played at the Dr Mário Mexia Multisports Hall in Coimbra.

Vitória SC gained an initial 2-0 lead in the first set, but the Azorean side fought its way back to reach the first technical timeout at 8-5. Despite Vitória’s effort to balance the match, AJFB sealed the first set with a score of 25-20.

AJ Fonte Bastardo continued to control the match through the second set, widening the gap with a 19-10 score.  Pablo Cirqueira, Gilson França and Manuel Silva helped the team win the set 25-15. The Azorean side started the third set very strongly with a 4-1 and then a 6-2 lead and Jardel stood out in the attack helping the team close with a score of 25-21.

Alexandre Afonso, AJFB head coach said, “I’m very proud to be the first coach to achieve a victory in the Cup of Portugal Final for Fonte Bastardo. It’s a privilege to work with this club which deserves this title and more.”

“Fonte Bastardo performed very well,” said Allan Cocato, VSC head coach. “They didn’t risk much and waited for our team’s errors. Nevertheless I’m very proud of the fact that we reached the Final and of the support from our fans. We have a young team and at the beginning of the season we never thought we would reach the Cup Final, so we’re glad to have achieved that.”
