Gold Medals for Brazil and Chile in Paraguay

The teams from Brazil and Argentina on the podium at the end of the fifth stop of the South American Beach Volleyball competition

Asuncion, Paragauay, March 24, 2013 – Asuncion city hosted the fifth stop of the South American Beach Volleyball competition.  Brazilians Barbosa and Simones (BRA1) won over the other Brazilian team (BRA2) in the women’s final while the Grimalt cousins from Chile (CH1) took home the medal after their match against Venezuela (VEN2) in the men’s final.

As with the previous stop in Lima, the finals in Paraguay saw two Brazilian women’s teams. Barbosa–Simones overcame Secomandi–Berti in a hard fought match, which ended with a score of 2-0 (21-19, 22-20).

“We knew that facing the other Brazilian team in the final would be very tough because we know each other and how much each of us can give in the final match,” said the happy winner Liliana Simones. “This is the best of South American competitions because of its very high level,” she added afterwards. “We were aware of everything that could have happened during the match. That’s why we tried to stay calm and happy, when we first entered the field,” said team-mate Rebecca Barbosa.

The bronze medal was fought by Venezuelans Vera–Mosquera (VEN2) against Argentinians Gallay– Zonta (ARG1) with a final victory for Argentina 2-0 (21-16, 21-16).

At the men’s tournament, Esteban-Marco Grimalt from Chile became the champions after defeating the Venezuelan team of Igor Hernandez-Jesus Villafañe (VEN 2), 2-1 (21-19, 14-21, 15-13). It was a match which showed an outstanding level of volleyball compounded with the excitement of the audience.

The Grimalt cousins did not start well but then slowly recovered and without losing their pace levelled the match to get the lead and win the tie-breaker.

After the end of the match, Marco Grimalt enthused, “We are very happy with this victory because it is the first time we have defeated these rivals in ten matches. Therefore we feel very satisfied and happy.”

“We played well, we talked a lot with our coach, we used the strategy we planned and luckily everything came out as we wanted. The first set was all ours. In the second we lost concentration but then in the third we were very calm which allowed us to obtain the points that gave us the victory”.

The Paraguayan Sport Minister, Marcelo Bedoya was present at the venue to watch the final matches. He expressed his appreciation of the facilities at Ecoparque Santa Felicidad, where all the competitions took place. “Volleyball is a sport that needs a lot of training and work in the long term, something that the Paraguayan Volleyball Federation with Bruno Zubizarreta as its president is already doing.”

The next stop of this season’s South American Beach Volleyball Circuit will take place in the city of Bogota, Colombia, from May 3 to 5.
