South American Beach Volleyball Tour arrives in Peru

Peru is looking forward to hosting the fourth leg of the South American Beach Volleyball Tour
Lima, Peru, February 28, 2013 – The South American Beach Volleyball Tour will have its fourth stop from March 1 to 3 at Miraflores Park in the Los Delfines Beach area of Lima in Peru.
Sixteen men’s teams and 16 women’s team will take part in the competition, with entrants from Peru, Colombia, Chile, Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. The hosts will have a total of 15 teams, led by Cuban coach Conrado Reyes.

Top-ranked Brazil will field four teams: Lili/ Rebecca and Fernanda Berti/ Elize Maia; and Thiago/ Alvaro Filho and Hevaldo/ Philip Edson. 

The two women's teams have already tasted victory. Lili and Rebecca were champions at the opening stop in Argentina, while Fernanda and Elize won the gold in the last round in Uruguay. Argentina is second in the standings, with Chile third.

In the men’s standings, Brazil and Chile are tied at the top, followed by Venezuela. 

Under new FIVB beach volleyball rules, the host country can enter as many teams as it considers necessary up to a maximum of 16 pairings. Teams from the same country can also face each other in the final.

The Lima event will also mark the retirement from the sand of Nora Flores and César Sayers after 20 years of involvement in the sport. 

Roger Rengifo, half of Peru’s top male team said the players appreciate the experience they have gained recently: “We’ve been getting greater support from our federation and it’s the first time we’ve been able to participate in more than one stop on the circuit, and this is giving us the international experience we need."
