Portuguese Federation bring Christmas cheer to underprivileged children
The visiting delegation included Miguel Maia, Portugal’s most famous volleyball player. Maia held the children spellbound with his own account of how he grew up with volleyball from the age of 6 to become an international star.
The visit was part of the FPV’s social programme to help the underprivileged, particularly children.
“The FPV visit is very important for us,” explained Irene Moreira of CSPNSV’s Executive Council. “Why? Because the children who had this opportunity today come from families with very low economic power. Their families also have very low social and academic skills and don’t have many opportunities to experience other activities beside those provided here.
“One of our objectives is to provide different experiences which will help them develop fully in all areas, and sport is a part of that development. The presence of the Federation here is important; they are willing to share. In this moment of crisis that we are facing now, there is an absence of joy, even at Christmas. You can only share if you have someone to share with. Nobody is happy alone. So, the message that I would like to leave to all is Merry Christmas, with joy shared with others.”
Maia said he was honoured to be there. “We feel very honoured to be here today in another social initiative from the FPV, and to be able to bring some joy to these kids, giving them a moment of happiness and teaching them a little about volleyball. We wish all a Merry Christmas. I believe the Portuguese Volleyball Federation is having an enormous success with social initiatives, bringing joy to children.”
