Stefan Hüber makes surprise move to beach volleyball

Stefan Hübner retired from the German volleyball team after the Beijing Olympics with 224 caps to his name
Lausanne, Switzerland, November 29, 2012 - Stefan Hübner, one of the world's best middle blockers who played on Germany’s national volleyball team 224 times, recently announced that he will join the coaching staff of Olympic beach volleyball champions, Julius Brink and Jonas Reckerman.

The following is an extract from his interview with the German Volleyball Federation to answer a few questions about this surprise move.

DVV: How did you come to join the coaching staff of the Olympic champions Brink / Reckermann?

Hübner: Julius Brink approached me. At first I thought he wanted me as a new partner.

DVV: When did you first talk about it?

Hübner: The first substantive discussions took place after Julius Brink and his former coach Jürgen Wagner parted ways.

DVV: The coaching staff also includes Markus Dieckmann and Hans Voigt. Is the distribution of tasks already clear?

Hübner:  We already have a rough idea of the collaboration, but the details will be clarified in the next few weeks.

DVV: You were one of the world's best blockers in volleyball, while Jonas Reckermann is one of the best blocker on the sand. How can you help?

Hübner: I look forward to many interesting discussions with Jonas on this issue and hope that together we can develop new ideas.

DVV:  You do not have a great deal of beach volleyball experience. Do you think this will be problem or an advantage when coming up with new ideas?

Hübner: In some areas, beach volley will be new territory. But in the end this is still volleyball. The idea is to analyse techniques and movements in order to improve the team’s tactical, physical and mental ability. I’m really looking forward to working with top people like Hans Voigt, Markus Dieckmann and Lothar Linz.

DVV: What attracted you to this commitment?

Hübner:  I'm in my early coaching career and always on the lookout for ways to improve. In my opinion it is important to constantly expand one’s horizons. Brink / Reckermann are one of the most professional teams in German Volleyball and I’m looking forward to being part of this big challenge.

DVV: What does Vital Heynen have to say about your beach volleyball engagement?

Hübner: I have Vital Heynen’s whole support and will work hard to ensure that our relationship is well maintained through strong organisation and clear arrangements.

DVV: What does Stefan Hübner’s week look like now?

Hübner: My week is not much changed much. I still try to keep myself fit, and in December
I will be commuting between Cologne and Baku.

DVV:  Do you think you will find the time to continue following the action in the Bundesliga and the activities of the national team?

Hübner: I’m looking forward to being back in Cologne on a regular basis starting in December. This will give me a chance to look in on a few games from time to time.
