Volei Masters tournament in Rio comes to successful end
A total of 1,276 athletes on 161 teams, including competitors from Peru, Argentina and Finland, took part in the event with Rio de Janeiro state having the highest numbers of participating teams (55), followed by Minas Gerais (27), Distrito Federal (18) and São Paulo (15). There are also teams from Paraná, Espírito Santo, Rio Grande do Sul, Bahia, Goiás, Ceará, Pernambuco, Santa Catarina and Tocantins.
The first day was reserved for the Technical Meeting of the over-35 and over-40 categories followed by matched played by men’s and women’s teams in seven other categories.
Team SINDPD took home gold in the men’s 45+ age category, while the Minas Tênis Clube won the top prize in the women’s competition in the same category. DF-Amavolei and Flamengo beat out the completion to win gold in the men’s and women’s competition, respectively, in the 50+age category. Team Finland won gold in the men’s 55+ age category while the staff of Cia Ball took home titles in the women’s 55+, 59+ and 63+ age categories. In the 70+ age category the title went to the Military Club.
The high level of enthusiasm among the participants and the excitement of the winners were evident. “Despite the tiredness, we’re happy. We came to Brazil and won four medals and I hope to return next year,” said Matti Haapala, member of Team Finland that won gold in the men’s 55+ age category.
The beach volleyball duo of Felício/Diogo were crowned champions in the men’s 35+ age category and the women’s pair Roberta/Sulenise won gold.
Luiz Felipe Schmidt and Flavio won the title in the 40+ age category, while first place went to women’s pair Elenice / Leninh in the same age group.
